SOUND OVERFLOWSOFTWARE FOR SOUND DESIGNERS
EFFECT / AUDIO FX / V1.0
A character saturator built on cores with memory. Six cores, up to three stages, a low end kept out of the fire and a level that stays honest when you push.

Most saturators send every sample through the same curve. FORGE uses cores with memory: what comes out depends on what came before, the way iron, tape and valves really behave. The distortion moves with the music instead of sitting on top of it.
Around those cores, everything a mix needs: a split between attack and body, up to three stages, a protected low end, honest level compensation and the HEARTH, a screen that shows how hot the cores really run. 40 factory presets in eight categories get you started.
The screen draws the loop the cores trace, coloured by their real temperature: warm, cherry, orange, white. Set INPUT and DRIVE by eye.
Slow drifts of the gain, offsets that add even harmonics, a bias that moves: WEAR gives the cores the life of real hardware.
Each instance has its own small tolerances, like two units of the same machine, and your project keeps them.
INPUT, DRIVE, TRANSIENT and WEAR glide over 20 ms, and a change of core or stages crossfades in 15 ms: switch them while the music plays.
UP CLOSE
Captured from the real interface, while it plays.
BODY holds the note, ATTACK takes the first milliseconds of each hit. IRON and TAPE weigh and glue, TUBE breathes, GERMANIUM spits and dies, SILICON and FOLD go further. Each core has its own range, from x11 on TAPE to x25 on SILICON at full DRIVE, and switching crossfades in 15 ms while the music plays.
On the left, the loop the cores trace: a curve without memory would draw a single line. On the right, the dry and the processed sound side by side. The temperature, from warm to white, follows the real output of the cores: raise INPUT until it turns warm or cherry, then DRIVE has its full travel.
TRANSIENT decides which part takes the DRIVE. Towards attack, the hits burn and the body stays cleaner; towards body, the note thickens and the hits stay sharp. With an ATTACK core, two cores share the sound in time, with no gap and no click.
ANCHOR keeps a share of the band below ANCHOR HZ (50 to 260 Hz) out of the cores, then puts it back after them, in mono, with a little even-harmonic warmth that grows with DRIVE. The kick and the bass keep their weight, however hard you push.
WEAR brings the slow drifts of the gain, offsets that add even harmonics and a bias that moves on TUBE and GERMANIUM. At 0 the cores are brand new; turned up, they have lived.
One stage only saturates the loud parts. Two or three in cascade reach much lower levels: the saturation window grows and the quiet details get their share. On a bus, x1 or x2 with a low DRIVE; for density, x3.
With COMPENSATION on PEAK, DRIVE turns into density, not volume: you judge the colour, not the loudness. QUALITY sets the oversampling around the cores: ECO x1, STUDIO x4 by default, MASTER x8 for the cleanest highs.
